Fishing!

I’ve taken up fishing! I figured I should learn a crafting profession, so I became an armorsmith. Then I figured I ought to take up mining, so I wouldn’t have to keep buying ingots. Then I realized I couldn’t become a miner yet, because I’m based in Limsa Lominsa, and there’s no mining guild there, only fishing. I need to have some kind of gathering skill, I think, to make money to pay for materials for my armorsmithing, so here I am, a fisherwoman!

I’m really enjoying it so far! I’d never played a game with fishing in it before, and now I see what all the fuss is about! I’ve fished in several different locations right outside of LL. I love how there are different fishes in different places, and different baits for different types of water. I wish the fishing log kept track of which bait I used to catch which fish. I’m often not sure if a location is saltwater or freshwater, and I don’t want to waste bait!

I’m also loving the Stealth skill. It makes me invisible to enemies under a certain level, and it’s totally worth the loss of running speed.

Vronwe, the Fledgling Adventurer

I’m not a huge MMORPG player. Before embarking on this adventure in Final Fantasy 14, I’d only played two other MMOs, Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. Oh and I dabbled in EVE, but only for a month. The reason why I got into FFXIV was because so many of the ads I saw for GW2 said it’s not your typical “kill 10 rats” type of MMO. Well, since I’ve only ever played Guild Wars games, I wanted to try a real “kill 10 rats” game! I’m a thrifty type, so I searched Google for MMOs that have free trials, and chose FFXIV from the list!

Guys, I’m completely in love! I love all the options in character creation, with so many races, skin colors, hair styles, and even character voices to choose from! I love how clearly everything is explained in the Help system. Every new thing I encounter, like quests, and handing things over to an NPC, and normal quality vs high quality loot is all explained in little windows that pop up the first time you encounter them. It’s amazing. Because I haven’t played many MMOs, I was worried that a new game would just be too confusing for me and I’d never enjoy it, but the Help system is allowing me to have so much fun!

I think what I’m going to do with this blog is talk about all the cool things I find as I encounter them through the game. My character is Vronwe E’vrol, a Miqo’te Marauder. She’s level 4 as of this post. I’m loving the ax so far, but I have to say I did not enjoy the quest in which I had to kill Lost Lambs. The ladybugs and rats were fine, but killing little lost babies just broke my heart! Fortunately, I completed that quest while doing another quest in which I had to collect lamb meat for a chef, so at least the killing wasn’t in vain.
